Should We Use the Old Testament?

Jesus Christ commanded His followers “to live by EVERY word of God.”  Were the Old Testament scriptures included in that command?

Transcript:

The Constant Church of God presents clear answers to your questions, directly from the Bible!

Many seem to believe the Old Testament was intended only for the Jews. That the message of that part of the Bible — from Genesis to Malachi — is no longer valid.

Is that what the Bible says?

Open your Bibles and turn to John chapter 5.

Jesus is responding to the baseless accusations of the religious teachers of the Jews.

Let’s read verse 39.

39 You search the Scriptures, for in them you think you have eternal life; and these are they which testify of Me.

What scriptures was Jesus referring to?

The Old Testament!

Those scriptures were all they had at the time.

The New Testament as we know it today had yet to be written.

Scriptures like this one.

In John chapter 1 and verse 45, Philip tells Nathaniel, “We have found him, of whom Moses in the law, and the prophets, did write, Jesus of Nazareth, the son of Joseph.”

Did Moses write about Jesus?

Deuteronomy chapter 18 proves that he did.

Let’s read verse 15

15 The Eternal your God will raise up unto you a Prophet from the midst of you, of your brethren, like unto me; unto him you shall hearken;[or pay attention to];

Did other Old Testament prophets speak about Jesus Christ, too?

Yes, they did.

The Old Testament prophet Micah wrote this in Micah chapter 5 and verse 2.

2 But you, Bethlehem Ephratah, though you be little among the thousands of Judah, yet out of you shall he come forth unto me that is to be ruler in Israel;

This was how the chief priests and the experts of the Jewish law were able to tell King Herod confidently that the King of the Jews would be born in Bethlehem of Judah.

The prophets Isaiah, Jeremiah and Zechariah also wrote about Jesus Christ.

Notice Isaiah chapter 9 and verse 6.

6 For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given: and the government shall be upon his shoulder: and his name shall be called Wonderful, Counsellor, The mighty God, The everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace.

Now turn to Jeremiah chapter 23 and verse 5.

5 Behold, the days come, saith the Lord, that I will raise unto David a righteous Branch, and a King shall reign and prosper, and shall execute judgment and justice in the earth.

And, finally Zechariah chapter 9 and verse 9.

9 “Rejoice greatly, O daughter of Zion! Shout, O daughter of Jerusalem! Behold, your King is coming to you; He is just and having salvation, Lowly and riding on a donkey, A colt, the foal of a donkey.

How could the Old Testament be done away, when so much of it prophesied about Christ the Messiah?

Even Jesus Christ Himself referred to and quoted the Old Testament scriptures.

The straightforward, plain and clear truth is that the Old Testament scriptures are still valid!

In Acts chapter 28, the apostle Paul is under house arrest in Rome.

And for two whole years he preached to all those who came to his house.

And what did he preach?

Acts 28 and verse 23.

23 And when they had appointed him a day, there came many to him into his lodging; to whom he expounded and testified the kingdom of God, persuading them concerning Jesus, both out of the law of Moses, and out of the prophets, from morning till evening.

Paul used the Old Testament scriptures to preach Jesus Christ.

God said we are to live by EVERY word of God.

The ENTIRE Bible.

All the scriptures, BOTH the Old AND New Testaments.

In 1st Peter chapter 1 and verse 25, the chief apostle Peter wrote that “The word of the Lord endures for ever.”

FOR EVER means forever.

Those Old Testament scriptures are the word of the Lord that endures for ever.

The Old Testament scriptures prophesied about Jesus Christ our Redeemer and Savior Who came with a message from God the Father: the good news of the Kingdom of God!

They are not obsolete!

They are valid and binding FOR EVER upon all true Christians today!
