What Is Sin?

People have their own individual definitions of what sin is! How does God define SIN?

Transcript:

The Constant Church of God presents clear answers to your questions, directly from the Bible!

What is SIN?

A survey found that 87 percent of American adults believe that sin is “something that is almost always considered wrong, particularly from a religious or moral perspective.

A research company found respondents viewed sin as “relative. . . not as God views it, but how we view it.”

Today, sin is whatever people think it is.

Is that what the Bible says?

God did not leave it up to us to decide WHAT sin is!

Otherwise, there would be as many definitions of sin as there are people.

But God is specific!

God is definite and clear!

God leaves no doubt whatsoever about what sin is.

Open your Bibles and see for yourselves what the Supreme Authority, God Almighty, says sin is.

Turn to 1st John chapter 3 and verse 4.

4 Whosoever committeth sin transgresseth also the law: for sin is the transgression of the law.

Sin is breaking God’s law.

Now, what law is He talking about?

He’s referring to the Ten Commandments!

But weren’t those Old Testament laws intended for the Jews only?

No, they were not.

HOW can we know?

Look at what God Himself says in Genesis chapter 26 and verse 5.

5 because Abraham obeyed my voice and kept my charge, my commandments, my statutes, and my laws.
“Abraham obeyed Me,” God says, “and he kept MY commandments, MY statutes and MY laws.”

And Abraham was not a Jew.

But, didn’t Jesus Christ abolish the Ten Commandments?

No, He did not!

Notice what Jesus Himself says in Matthew chapter 5 and verse 17.

17 “Think not that I have come to abolish the law and the prophets; I have come not to abolish them but to fulfil them.

Not only did He NOT abolish them, He said “I have come to fulfill them.”

To bring them to their fullest significance and meaning!

Not only did Christ keep them according to the letter of the law, He lived by and magnified God’s law.

To show us its fullest spiritual application and to set us an example that we should follow in His steps.

To make sure we understood this new, magnified style of lawkeeping, Jesus Christ gave us a vivid example.

27 “You have heard that it was said, ‘You shall not commit adultery.’

28 But I say to you that every one who looks at a woman lustfully has already committed adultery with her in his heart.

Instead of doing away with His Father’s law, Christ elevated it to the spiritual level by keeping the spirit or intent of the law.

And we understand breaking the law always results in consequences.

Breaking the law always exacts a penalty.

We park illegally, we pay a fine for the parking ticket.

We drive over the speed limit and we get pulled over, we pay a fine for the traffic violation.

Same thing with God’s law.

You break God’s law, you suffer a penalty.

Romans chapter 6 and verse 23 specifies the penalty for sin.

23 For the wages of sin is death . . .

When we sin by breaking God’s law, we incur the death penalty.

But the God of the Bible is a merciful and loving God.

He does not want a single human being to perish.

So, when we repent, wholeheartedly and sincerely; when we acknowledge our guilt; and, we turn from going the wrong way and head towards the right way —— the way of righteousness and obedience —— God promises to forgive us.

Look at 1st John chapter 1 and verse 9.

9 If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just, and will forgive our sins and cleanse us from all unrighteousness.
God wipes away our sins.

Hebrews chapter 10 and verse 17 says “And their sins and iniquities will I remember no more.”

Our sins are ERASED and FORGOTTEN.

TOTALLY. COMPLETELY.

And we are reconciled with God.

No longer cut off from God, but restored to a right relationship with Him.

And, most important of all, we are back on the right path that leads to eternal life.

That’s EXACTLY what God wants.

Let’s read Romans chapter 6 and verse 23 again, all the way to the end of the verse.

23 For the wages of sin is death but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.
We must obey God’s Law.

Keep it.

In the letter and in the spirit of HIS law.

We need to abide by it. Live according to HIS law.

And God promises He will give us HIS gift of eternal life!
